Permitting PDF Print E-mail

Permitting is an important part of transporting heavy haul freight. Extremely heavy freight can cause much wear-and-tear on our highways. In addition, some roads and bridges were simply never meant to accommodate the weight of today's freight. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the issue of safety.

So, when you request a quote, please be sure to tell us as much as possible about the over-dimensional freight. Inaccuracies can slow the quoting process and even result in more fees down the road. It is imperative to learn as much as you can about the freight to be transported first. If you do not know what questions to ask, do not hesitate to call us. There are many items you may not think of, and we have enough experience to know the questions you should be asking.

If you are moving over-dimensional heavy machinery, the weight, width and height can be found in the "transport spec's" section of your owner's manual. Or, you can simply give us the make and model of the equipment, and we can look it up for you.

Since no one likes surprises, you should be aware of the most common types of fees and permits associated with permitting over-dimensional freight:

  • Oversize and / or Overweight Permits
  • Single Trip / Registration or Fuel / IFTA
  • Superloads
  • KYU Number
  • 30/60/90 Day Permits
  • Annual Permits
  • Individual State Permits
  • Pilot Car / Escort Fees
  • Manufacturing of Special Equipment to Handle Heavy Loads

Furthermore, some states may charge more for a particular type of freight, or weight classes may be different from state to state. It is not uncommon for one state's permit for the same item be twice as much or more than that of another state.

Again, information is the key when it comes to safety and to permitting your heavy haul loads correctly the first time around. You want the process to be as smooth as possible. Your small amount of research combined with our experience can make a 150 ton shipment a smooth process.
